Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit Manipur on 13th
September 2025 after very long gap since the ethnic violence begin in May 2023, he launch around 19 big projects with worth more then Rs 7,300 crore, these project focusing on infra development, education sector, health care facilities, also womens empowerment programs and rural uplift, even tho heavy rain grounded his helicoptor he still traveled by road from Imphal to Churachandpur, peoples waving Indian flags standing on roadside, he also meet families staying in relief camps, try showing sympathy and talk about unity & dialouge between hill and valley communities, while many supporters says this visit is like new ray of hope for peace in Manipur, opposition leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticize him saying the visit come too late and its only cosmetic move because violence already killed dozens and displaced more then 57,000 people since last two years.
Locals reaction was mixed, some really feels proud that PM coming directly to their town after so much unrest, many shouting slogans, kids holding flags, and people was happy to see him walking on muddy road when weather was very bad. But still critics saying it was political show, not real solution, they question if goverment is serious about ending ethnic clash or only doing projects announcement for headlines.
Development projects were main highlight, with promises of better highway, bridges, modern schools, new health centers, also womens skill centers for employment, these infra plans supposed to give jobs and also improve connectivity in hill areas. Modi speech also stress that both valley and hill people must talk, understand each other and work together for peace, he said goverment is commited for future of Manipur and India unity.
But, oppositions argue that words without actions mean nothing, Kharge said if Modi really care he should visit earlier when violence was burning state, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also called the visit “too late and too little”, saying families living in camp two years shows goverment failure to control situation.
Supporters of PM reply that development always take time, and atleast now focus is on rebuilding Manipur, they claim new projects worth crores will transform state and will also restore faith among youth who lost hope due to ethnic violence. They also says Modi personal road journey inspite of rain show his dedication.
Many journalist covering event noted that PM interacting with women groups and youth in camp created emotional moments, he hug some children and listen to their issues, also announce scholarships, free medicines supply, and future health scheme. Such gestures were praised in local media.
However, analyst says these kind of visits always become political battleground, ruling party showcase development, opposition highlight delays, and actual ground people still struggle everyday with fear and displacement. Camps still overcrowded, houses destroyed not yet rebuild, and many communities still not trusting each other.
People from hill side communities mention that they appreciate project announcements but real need is security, peace and justice for victims, they feel goverment must work harder to bring reconciliation, not just infrastructure. Valley side groups also express same, saying that without trust between communities no road or bridge can solve issue.
Modi words on unity was important but also critics noted that in two years center was silent many times when clashes happen, so trust deficit remain. Even some BJP local leaders feel visit should have come earlier.
Economists commenting that Rs 7,300 crore is big investment for small state like Manipur, if implemented well it can transform transport, healthcare and education. Specially new women empowerment programs may create jobs and stability. But big question remain how much of this fund actually reach ground, because corruption and delays often destroy such schemes.
Public reaction online also divided, some praising PM with hashtags like
